ACCESS BOOKS
Our grant for $30,500 provides books and furniture to refurbish and fully stock an elementary school library in a Title 1 school in Compton. 500 children per year will have access to a revitalized school library filled with 2,250 new books, new furniture, and literary themed murals. In addition, 3,000 books that have been donated to Access Books will be distributed to create individual classroom libraries. For most of the children covered by this grant request, access to books comes from only one source-their school library. When books are available, teachers report that students show increased interest in the library and reading, greater confidence in their reading ability, and greater confidence in themselves.
